Many friends of the Office of the Mayor of Idyllwild have asked for this page.

The endeavors of the Mayor’s office are not funded by any tax generated within the town like most Mayor’s offices. As Idyllwild is unincorporated, there is no local tax.

The Mayor’s activities are funded by his Chiefs of Staff, Phyllis Mueller and Glenn Warren, from the income they generate in their full-time jobs. However, Mayor Max is a second full-time job that takes them away from their other jobs, thus not only increasing their expenses but also lowering the income they make at their regular employment for any daytime visit between 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific.

They also fund the calendars annually (which we do NOT sell but give away as a gift). Every week, they also give as gifts the ties and certificates for the Deputy Mayor Program. Easily more than 1000 Deputy Mayors are made in a month, and often that number reaches 2000. Gasoline as well is expensive, bringing the Mayor downtown every day and sometimes multiple times per day.

Because Mayor Max was conceived as a gift to the community, we have never had merchandise to offset costs or required any income for services rendered until July 15, 2025. We did finally create some stickers that we sell by the car side to help offset rising costs. In November 2026, we added magnets. We have now added pins, baseball caps, the Mini Max stuffy, and coasters to our merchandise. In 2026, we plan to add a shopping cart to the website where merchandise will be handled by an on-demand company for apparel and other items. Merchandise purchases via our website or when you see us downtown in Idyllwild are very helpful to us as well.

Any other Mayor Max merchandise you see in Idyllwild is not ours. If you can purchase Mayor Max items from us downtown at the car side or online when we get our website set up, this will be very helpful and greatly appreciated as well. There are three exceptions. In Idyllwild, Mountain Paws is authorized to sell our merchandise, and that is very helpful to us. Also, the Brewpub does pay us a commission for Mayor Max merchandise that they sell. Since 2020, we also do a fundraising initiative to help us cover a portion of the printing costs for the 10,000 calendars we print and distribute as a gift annually. We are very appreciative for the help from Mountain Paws, the Brewpub, and our calendar printing donors.
